Tuesday Lovin': Somebody I Used to Know - Gotye

I guess it's a surefire sign that you're old when you like songs played on the radio.  In my defense I heard this one on our new 'alternative' station so maybe I can maintain some shred of dignity.

This one snuck up on me.  It has a very 80s vibe, and the guy's voice is oddly familiar, but he's not actually someone I heard before.  The first time I heard it, I liked it enough not to change the station but wasn't sure I LIKED it.  By the second time I was hooked.  I finally bought it yesterday on Amazon MP3.

I'm not crazy about the video, but it's the easiest way to share the song. I listened to some of the other tracks by Gotye, and they're ok (definitely an 80s vibe) but I don't LOVE any of the others like this one. I love the Peter Gabriel/Sting sound to his voice.

You may have also seen this version performed by a Canadian band Walk Off the Earth, using just their voices and *one guitar* for the whole thing. It's really fun to watch. I like the original best, though.

What do you think? Like it? Meh?

  1. I really like this song and took the plunge buying the whole album. I was pretty surprised that the other songs tend to be completely different than the radio single.

  2. Woot! I'm a fan of Gotye- this song was #1 in the national youth radio station vote this year. So, total credibility. Kimbra (the female singer ) is pretty good too. She's a New Zealander.

I haven't listened to much of his current album, but I liked 'Heart's a mess' and 'learnalilgivinanlovin' from his first album.

  3. I like the song - been hearing about it a lot on the internets. Sometimes popular radio songs are actually really, really good (e.g. "Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster the People)

  4. @Laura - yeah, I was surprised by how different the album was too. There was another song that has a YouTube video that I liked, that I may go back and download later.

@Zenmoo - I'll have to check out his older stuff. I think this song might be an outlier for me, though - I wasn't blown away by his other songs. But I didn't *dislike* them either, so maybe they need to grow on me too :)

@hush - I think I've heard that one but not sure, so I'm off to look it up :)

  5. Yea, that's pretty good. Overly-dramatic, over-emotional, well-sung. Just like I like them.
